Once we have satisfied our most basic needs we can begin to think about the other needs we have as humans.
Advertisers use Maslow's theory very effectively. They create false needs in people by linking products to our human needs. E.g. Do you really need another perfume? Well, if the advert promises that you'll feel sexier then you may be more inclined to buy it.
