Up to around 18 months children don't recognise themselves in a mirror. Our sense of self develops throughout our lives as we become increasingly autonomous / independent.
Some children display early signs of maturity but do they have the emotional intelligence that goes along with it or have they been 'trained' to do something? Ask Shakira.
