Hairstyles

Hairstyles reflect personal taste but even more so, they reflect social, political and economic trends.

1920s - Post WWI, women reflected their new
sense of independence by chopping off their locks
and getting a bob. The same happened again in the
60s feminist revolutionary days.
(Louise Brooks)

1969 - Black empowerment led to African Americans
embracing their Afro after years of trying to
straighten it and fit in.
(Diana Ross)

1950s - The bouffant celebrated glamour and was
popularised by Hollywood stars such as Joan Collins.

1970s - White women, and then men, wanted afros too.
Kevin Keegan made the perm a style statement for men.

The 'Rachel' of the 90s made popular by
Jennifer Anniston in 'Friends'.
Looks natural but is so high maintenance.

 2000's - Indulgent days of high-maintenance
cuts requiring lots of hair-care products and playing
to our obsession with ourselves in the pre-recession naughties.

Today: The backward -looking Edwardian
short back and sides with beards and moustaches
reflects the conservatism of these recession years.
