You MUST carry out research because some of your marks are based on your ability to work with relevant resources drawn from a range of sources.
Types of sources which you should explore include:
- text/reference books (library)
- newspapers/magazines (library/internet)
- internet
- film/TV/radio (AV library)
Keep a list of your sources because you will need to list them in your bibliography.
It is not necessary to carry out primary research in the form of surveys, questionnaires, etc, but you should demonstrate your ability to analyse cultural texts using the semiotic and process approach tool kits.
Useful places to start:
- Newspaper websites such as http://www.theguardian.com/uk
- TV websites such as www.channel4.com
- Youtube
- Academic sources such as Dan Chandler's Media and Comms site http://users.aber.ac.uk/dgc/media/index.html
- Google search engine
Word of warning: be critical of your sources, where they come from, how old they are, etc.
