Counterculture

'Counterculture' describes groups or movements who challenge accepted social norms. For example, the 1950s Beat Generation, the 1960s Hippies, the 1970s Punks, the 1990s Grunge and the 2000s Occupy Movement.

Counterculture plays an important role in society. It challenges the status quo, encourages people to think and question traditional ideologies and often results in changes in society, attitudes and even laws. For example, Homosexuality was a crime in the UK until 1967.

However, it is strange to see how Counterculture movements quickly become the spearhead of commercial campaigns and how once taboo ideas (men wearing a "women's colour" - pink) become popular trends.
